12.3 Ivory Carvings

Ivory is the tusks of the elephant and are the mammal's upper incisor teeth which is large enough to do a carving and unlike human teeth, continue to grow throughout their lifespan. The teeth and tusks have the same physical structure: pulp cavity, dentine, cementum and enamel with dentine being the major component of ivory.

Elephant Ivory is used for crafting ornaments since it is rare and beautiful.

Many of the items exhibited were detected in year 1991 while kept concealed among the upholstery of Captain's cabin in a ship at Colombo port in an attempt to export violating Customs Ordinance read with Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.

Detecting Officers: B.A.Aberathne (ASC) , S.Ravikumaran (APO)

One of the items were donated by Mr. K.A.N.S.Kodithuwakku.
