14.3. Turtle Shell Ornaments


Hawksbill sea turtles have been hunted for centuries to produce jewellery and other luxury items. Since it is an endangered species buying, selling or importing any sea turtle products are strictly prohibited by law in many countries including Sri Lanka under Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.

Most of the exhibited items were detected at Bandaranayake International Airport while attempting to export concealed inside passenger baggage in year 2000.
